There was only one Johnny Goode, and we may rest assured there will never be another like him. His wild and wide-ranging journey encompassed such passions as restaurant and nightclub pioneer, talented artist and writer and state judo champion. As his nickname implied, he was a bear of a man who loved huge dogs, beautiful women and little kittens with an all-encompassing fervor.
Born September 9, 1949, in San Antonio to John William Goode Jr. and Janet Irwin Goode, Johnny lived his entire life as an adventure. He backpacked throughout Europe, studied art in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where he became fluent in the Spanish Language, graduated from Alamo Heights High School and earned his degree in fine arts at the University of Texas where he was a Legendary member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
His innovations in the bar and grill business included The Bucket in Austin and The Quarter House, The Village Inn, Playa Santa Maria, and Juan Gringo's in San Antonio. A skilled artists and graphic designer, he carried his knack for special visual effects and design into his bar and restaurant ventures. In addition to his clubs, he employed this talent in his restaurant consulting business "The Restaurant Doc".
Johnny was a state heavy weight judo champion who defeated Randall Tex Cobb in martial arts competition. Cobb later lost a title-boxing match to former world heavy weight champion Larry Holmes.
Johnny Goode III was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother George Irwin Goode.
He is survived by his loving companion Shirl Young; David and Elenore Goode Brune of Dallas; four legged children, Toro, Boris, Oso and Annie, a horde of housecats, and countless friends from Canada to Mexico. An endless stream of amazing and incredible tales of "the gentle giant" will be likely be shared at the
