

He loved and cherished his wife of 57 years, his two children and their spouses, his two grandchildren, extended family and many friends. John lived by his faith, strong work ethic and wisdom he valued and shared. He believed in approaching relationships with a servant’s heart. A considerate friend, he loved sharing stories and encouraging others.
John was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, James Irvin.
He is survived by his wife, Libby (Elizabeth Girdner) Hannah; his daughter, Allison Brady and her husband, Bruce; his son, J. Robert Hannah Jr. and his wife, Lindsay; his grandchildren Spencer Brady and Elizabeth Brady; his sister, Pauline Irvin and her children: Cindy Brasher and her husband, David and Ken Irvin and his wife, Denise and their families.
His life experiences shaped John’s character. He was an Eagle Scout and lived by the values he learned. He graduated from Louisiana State University with a B.S. in Accounting and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. A natural leader and lifelong patriot, he proudly served his country as a Naval officer.
John was a driven young man, graduating from college at age 20, and certified as a CPA at 22. He began his accounting career with Arthur Young & Co. (Houston, TX) in 1960. In 1977, he opened John R. Hannah & Co., LLP (San Antonio, TX) and practiced until retiring in 2018. He was a member of various professional associations including the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA), San Antonio Estate Planners Council (SAEPC), and Financial Executives International (FEI).
He enjoyed and cherished his employee and client relationships throughout his life. His professional legacy includes his son and grandson following in his footsteps as CPAs.
He attended Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) starting in the 1970’s, serving through the years in administration and leadership. A highlight was his grandchildren joining him.
John served Alamo Heights UMC as a teacher, leader, administrator and volunteer. In 1997, he was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees and served in that role for 20 years, among other areas of service. He was a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class for approximately 50 years.
He cherished hunting and fishing trips, family time at Medina Lake and the coast, and travel with family and friends. For many years he enjoyed playing handball at the Downtown YMCA.
He supported, through his time and donations, the work of private charitable organizations. Based on his life experience, he focused on mentoring, family life, and marriage. Some cherished relationships, among many others, include Dr. James Dobson’s Family Institute, Focus on the Family, San Antonio Youth for Christ, San Antonio Marriage Initiative, Rezilient Kidz (also known as “Raising Highly Capable Kids”) and School Connect SA.
His loving family grieves in this profound loss but are confident he is in his eternal home with Jesus Christ. John’s legacy endures and is honored by his family and friends.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 E, San Antonio, TX 78232.

A reception at the church will follow the memorial service. Reverend Donna Strieb and Reverend Cory Albracht to officiate. Interment will be private for family at Sunset Memorial Park.
