

John Bruce Melvin, Sr., born June 4, 1945, in Washington, D.C., to Mildred and Bobby Melvin Sr., passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, October 3, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and service. A proud graduate of McKinley Tech High School, John joined the United States Army, embarking on a remarkable journey that would define his life.
In 1968, John met and married his beloved wife, Earl Mae Melvin, whom he affectionately referred to as the "LOVE OF HIS LIFE." Together, they nurtured a loving family, raising five children—Audrey (Tony), Nick, Greg (Kelly), John, and Michael (Tiffany)—while traveling the world and creating cherished memories.
John's dedication to his country was unwavering; he proudly served in the U.S. Army for 27 years, including two tours in Vietnam as a Special Forces Soldier. His commitment to duty, honor, and country earned him the distinction of a Purple Heart and the rank of SGM at retirement. Throughout his military career, he forged enduring bonds with fellow servicemen and women who recognized his potential and encouraged his growth, enabling him to mentor future military leaders.
Faith was the cornerstone of John's life. He accepted Jesus at an early age and dedicated himself to serving mankind and his church community. His integrity, humility, and wisdom were evident in all his interactions, leaving a lasting impact on his family and friends.
In his leisure time, John enjoyed building model airplanes, cars, and tanks, reflecting his meticulous nature and passion for craftsmanship. He also loved playing tennis and had a deep appreciation for music, especially Motown and classical genres, which brought him joy and nostalgia.
John was predeceased by his cherished wife, Earl Mae, in September 2023, as well as his parents, his sister Brenda Joyce Melvin, and his grandson Shomari Melvin. He is survived by his loving children, dear brother Bobby Melvin Jr., 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, brother-in-law James (Valerie) Sullivan, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and family friends who will forever cherish his guidance, warmth, and love.
John Bruce Melvin, Sr. will be remembered as a man of great strength, compassion, and unwavering faith. His legacy of love, dedication, and resilience will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know him.
Rest in eternal peace, John Bruce Melvin, Sr. Your country and family appreciate your sacrifice. You have worked for and deserve your rest. Your journey on this earth has ended, but YOU will FOREVER live on in our hearts.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 21, 2024, at Friendship Church.
