Dr. John Charles Parsons Jr., affectionately known as “Jiggs” by his grandchildren, passed away on December 23, 2024, at the age of 79, in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. A man of adventure and intelligence, with a quick wit and a passion for life, John left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. He was a cherished doctor, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Born on September 3, 1945, John spent most of his life in San Antonio. As a young man, John idolized his father, Dr. John Charles Parsons, and when he was not playing mischievous pranks on his sisters or watching planes at the airport, he loved accompanying his dad on house calls. After graduating from Alamo Heights High School, he pursued higher education at Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he joined the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. John met his beloved wife, Jean, during his college years and invited her to go water skiing on their first date. The two married while John was a student at the Baylor College of Dentistry. John graduated as a member of the Baylor Odonatological Honor Society, and he and Jean also welcomed their first daughter, Ashley, during this time. He moved his small family of three to Indianapolis, where he completed specialty training in periodontics at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. John served with distinction as a major in the U.S. Army Dental Corps at Fort McClellan, where his second daughter, Megan, was born, and later as the Chief of Periodontics at Noble Army Hospital. John ran a successful practice with offices in San Antonio, Laredo, and Eagle Pass. As a presenter and speaker nationwide, he was well-known for his meticulous techniques, beautiful visuals, and entertaining manner of speaking. During his distinguished career in periodontics, he served as President of the San Antonio District Dental Society and was named a fellow of both the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. In addition, he was awarded diplomate status by the American Board of Periodontology.
John's wide-ranging interests included almost any activity that involved adrenaline or the outdoors. John and his family felt most at peace in Rockport, engaging in endless fishing, boating, and scuba adventures. Whatever the pastime, John always created a community of enthusiasts who became close friends. His sense of humor was ever-present, and he was known to pull a person or small group aside and tell a great joke or story to get everyone laughing. The constant throughout his life was John’s love of Jesus Christ. His early formation through Trinity Baptist Church involved cherished memories with his family. Later, John and Jean joined Alamo Heights Methodist Church, where they served as Sunday school leaders and active members.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby and John Parsons. John is survived by his wife, Jean Flood Parsons, along with their daughters and their families: Ashley and her husband, Cottie Miles; Megan and husband, Hunter Johnson; and four grandchildren, Elise and Catie Miles and Beverly and Parsons Lindberg. He is also survived by his sisters, Merribell and M’Lissa Parsons; cousins Robert “Bobby” Luke and Libby Scott and her husband, Norton Hargis; and brother-in-law William “Bill” Flood and his children, Shannon and Mark Flood. John loved his sister-in-law Dinah Flood and her sons, Alan and Steven Alexander, and their families, as well as his extended family.
