Michael was many things to many people, some of which included being a son, brother, husband, father, and friend. Some knew him as Mike, Michael, John, Dad, or Woody but whatever the name, you knew he was there for you. He was righteous and loyal. In short he was a good man.
He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1976 and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1976-1980. He so loved his Marines, that every November he would ask why I didn't wait 5 more days so that our son Doug could be born on their birthday. To celebrate "his Marine birthday", he would make a special trip to the recruiting depot in Universal City with a handful of gift cards for the recruiters. He looked forward to that every year. That being said, he couldn't have been more proud than when his Nephew Chris graduated from Boot Camp in 1992.
Mike bought his first bike when he was 15. His Dad and twin brother would soon follow. His collection would include dirt bikes, a Honda Interceptor and most recently a Honda Gold Wing. His friends at the Cigar Club gave him a lot of grief for that one. He would get up early on his days off and often ride to Corpus for breakfast. He so enjoyed the ocean.
Mike was an avid reader. As time passed, his eye sight began to fail, so the Kids and I decided to purchase him a Nook. He was at best "technically challenged" so getting him an e-reader was going to be hit or miss. To our surprise it was a Big Hit. It opened up so many new avenues for him to explore. He was like a kid in a candy store. He got a lot of great recommendations from his friend Jon and had many long and enjoyable discussions about his most recent books.
Cigars and WW II history were just a few of his other passions. He loved the camaraderie that developed by just "hanging out" at the Club. Playing dominoes on Tuesdays were an added bonus. If you were to come by for a visit you could count on the TV being tuned to either the Military or History Channel. He could almost recite word for word any documentary that was being shown at the time.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, John and Louise Wood. He is survived by his wife, Cindy of 33 years; Daughter, Elizabeth Louise Morgan; Son in Law, Phillip Alan Morgan; Grandson, Brooks Alan Morgan and Son, Charles Douglas Wood. Other family members include Brother, Brian Douglas Wood; Sister, Karen Louise Aquino; Twin Brother, Charles Martin Wood, along with numerous Cousins, Nieces and Nephews. Close friends include Charles Hamilton and Janet Standard.
Grieve as you must, but remember as well, to celebrate a good Man's life
