

Joseph was born on August 18, 1934, the eldest son of Dr. Joseph “Joe” Francis Doyle, Jr. and Ella Blanche Doyle. He graduated from Central Catholic High School, Class of 1952. He attended St. Mary’s University for 2 years, pre-med before landing a position with the Advertising Department at Joske’s, a prominent department store in downtown San Antonio, Texas. This was the start of his long career in Advertising and Sales. He also proudly completed his military service in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in December of 1956. After returning from his military service in Europe he rejoined Joske’s and met Sandra on a blind date in the summer of 1957 and were married in August of 1958. In 1959, he joined the Northside Recorder as an advertising sales representative and worked in sales and management roles for the San Antonio Light, Houston Post and finally retired in 1998 from the San Antonio Express News.
Joseph enjoyed the outdoors including hunting, fishing and especially chasing butterflies and studying their habitat from the Hill County of Texas, all the way down to Mexico and parts of Central America with his wife and children in tow. He leaves behind an extensive collection as well being a renowned expert in the field of Lepidoptera. He was also an avid model train enthusiast and model builder. Thus, the nickname “Grandpa Choo Choo”!
Joseph was predeceased by his father Dr. Joseph “Joe” Francis and mother Ella Blanche; brother John Michael Doyle and in-laws Albert and Bernice Bomer.
Joseph is survived and missed by his loving wife and his four boys, Byron Patrick Doyle of Portland, TX, Craig R. Doyle (Maria Socorro) of San Antonio, TX, Brett L. Doyle of Manvel, TX, and Alan Joseph Doyle of Austin, TX and his sister Joella Kidder of San Antonio, TX.
Forever cherished and remembered as “Grandpa Choo Choo” by his 9 Grandchildren, Alan Joseph Jr., Brandon, Riley, Joshua, Jeremy, Travis, Marcela, Juani and Monica and Great Grandchildren, Caitlyn, Makayla, Lane, Addy Mae, Diego, Fernanda, Angel and Mia.
His memory lives on with his Nieces and Nephews: Lori, Dennis Jr., Sam, Joseph, Steven, Katherine and Johnnie.
A committal service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, located at 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209 on January 20, 2026, at 2:00 pm.
