Joseph was born in Waukegan, Illinois, to Jose C. and Ofelia Morin Fonseca on July 10, 1966. Although Texas was home for 46 years, the Northwest suburbs of Chicago—where he spent the first 13 years of his life—continued to hold a special place in his heart.
A 1984 graduate of Dilley High School, Joseph was active in sports, including baseball, basketball, and his beloved football. He went on to attend Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, Texas, where he quickly became as well-known and well-liked as he had been throughout his years in Dilley. After spending time living in Austin, he met and married the love of his life, Blanca Garcia. The two were wed on July 25, 1992, at St. Gregory the Great Church in San Antonio, Texas.
Joseph worked for several years as a technician at Midas. A gregarious soul, he loved the outdoors and cherished time spent with family, friends, and his dogs. He enjoyed playing golf, singing karaoke, and faithfully cheering on his Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. In 2016, he became a devoted UTSA Roadrunner football fan and especially loved attending games and tailgating whenever possible.
Joseph is preceded in death by his parents, Jose C. Fonseca and Ofelia Morin Fonseca, as well as his cherished pets, Maya and Raina.
He is survived by his wife, Blanca G. Fonseca, and their adopted dog, Theo; his sister, Rosemary F. Segura, and her spouse, Robert; his brother-in-love, Hector Benavides, and spouse, Patricia; his sisters-in-love, Sofia Chavez and spouse, Armando, and Sonia Estrada and spouse, Ruben; nephews Eric J. Estrada and Hector G. Benavides, Jr.; nieces Selena Chavez (Jack Rios), Sarah Chavez (Joey Garcia), and Mia Benavides; and numerous other family members and friends whom he loved dearly.
Pallbearers will be Mike Villarreal, Hector Benavides, Sr., Armando Chavez, Ruben Estrada, Darryl Morin, and David E. Fonseca.
A visitation will be held at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, located at 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, TX 78238, on February 19, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A rosary will also take place at the same venue on February 19, 2026, at 7:00 pm.
The funeral mass is scheduled for February 20, 2026, at 10:00 am at Holy Family Catholic Church, located at 152 Florencia Ave, San Antonio, TX 78228.
The family of Joseph A. Fonseca wishes to extend sincere thanks to the physicians and staff at University Hospital, UT Health San Antonio, PAM Specialty Hospital, and especially the team at VITAS Hospice Inpatient Unit, as well as the many medical professionals and clergy who attended to him. Special thanks also go to the family and friends who supported us throughout this journey.
