

He was born in Kenedy, Texas on July 28, 1936 and is preceded in death by his parents Angelita R. Cantu and Julian S. Cantu.
He is survived by his childhood love and wife of 53 years, Norma Jean Cantu, five children Xavier A. Cantu (Yvette), Julian E. Cantu, Norma J. Finger (Chris), Maria A. Schott (Brian), Elvia L. Barajas (Carlos), and eight treasured grandchildren: Elisa, Brandon, Gabriella, Alejandra, Ava, Brian, Sophia, and Julian.
He was a 1953 graduate of Central Catholic High School. An avid Longhorn fan, and life member of the Texas-Exes Alumni Association, he earned a Zoology degree in 1957 and graduated from the UT College of Pharmacy in 1960, as a member of Kappa Psi Fraternity.
He received his medical degree from the Universidad Autnoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico in 1971. He served a rotating internship at Memorial Medical Center in the Nueces County Hospital District in Corpus Christi, was certified by the American Board of Family Practice in 1978, and inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1979.
In 1980, he served as the president of The Alamo Chapter American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Cantu served as the chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee for the Baptist Health System, as well as the ethics committee. He was elected as the Chief of Staff at Baptist Medical Center for two consecutive terms.
In his strong Catholic faith, he was inducted as a knight in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, and served on the school board of St. Pius X.
Dr. Cantu worked in private practice for 43 years until his retirement. He healed with a humble heart and strong faith and truly cherished his generations of patients.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, compassionate Physician, friend, and mentor to many.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dicky Huey, M.D., David Marks, M.D., Judith Hernandez, M.D., nurse Remy and the entire ICU team of Methodist Stone Oak.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 8th from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. at St. Pius X Catholic Church.
