Born on September 13, 1931, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Karl was the son of John and Lois Duchemin. He began working on the family farm at a young age and proudly learned to drive a tractor by the age of eight. He attended a one-room schoolhouse before graduating from Williamsburg High School in 1949.
In 1951, Karl enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his service, he earned a certification in Airplane Mechanics and Hydraulics from the California Flyers School of Aeronautics. He served honorably during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal.
While stationed in the Air Force, Karl met Carolyn Hammond. They married in 1953 and had three children: Denice, Karl Jr., and Kim. His military career took him to Illinois, Georgia, Tokyo, California, Arkansas, Louisiana, and ultimately San Antonio, Texas. After 20 years of service, Karl retired in 1971 with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, having served as a Training Instructor. After retiring he met and married his 2nd wife, Mozelle.
Following his military retirement, Karl began a second career with Mr. M Convenience Stores as an Assistant General Manager. He later joined Reddy Ice Corporation, where he managed delivery operations and safety programs. He eventually retired again to enjoy his well-earned leisure years.
Karl had a passion for square dancing, gardening, golfing at the driving range, and painting. In his younger years, he served as a basketball referee and a baseball umpire. He often reminisced about officiating games for the Harlem Globetrotters, which sparked his lifelong love for basketball—especially the San Antonio Spurs.
A man of deep faith, Karl loved singing hymns and continued to do so until his final days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lois; his stepfather, Rev. Printis Spear; his brother, Milton; his sister, Marjorie; his first wife, Carolyn; and his second wife, Mozelle.
