Larry was born on September 15, 1939, in San Antonio, Texas, to Bonnie and Henry Rose. He was raised in Alamo Heights, where he attended Alamo Heights High School and graduated with the Class of 1957. During his time in middle and high school, he was an avid baseball player and a member of the McAllister Park Little League Team. Larry was a member of the Boy Scouts of America growing up and held these values throughout his life. He was also a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
After high school, Larry proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he attended Trinity University and Texas A&M University before continuing his studies at the London University School of Art in England.
While in England, Larry enjoyed a brief but memorable chapter of racing Lotus sports cars. Fast cars, open roads, and England in those years suited his intrepid spirit well. When he returned home, he devoted more than 40 years to his father’s business, Henry Rose Garage, and spent countless days at the family cattle ranch in Llano, Texas. The T-Stripe Ranch hosted many interesting figures over the years Larry tended it, including John Wayne and Chill Wills.
Larry was active in many civic, professional, and social organizations throughout his life. He served as President of the Automotive Service Association and the San Antonio Ski Club from 1973 to 1974, as Vice President of the Academic Lucerne in Switzerland, and as a board member of the NEISD Industrial Education department.
Larry was also a proud member of the Texas State Cattle Raisers Association, Texas State Technical Institute, the Hill Country Livestock Association, the Sports Car Club of America, the Sports Car Club of Great Britain and was the co-founder of Poor Boys Drag Racing Club with Sandy Sandstedt. He belonged to the San Antonio Country Club, the Alamo Heights Conopus Club, and, most recently, the Dominion Country Club. Alongside his tenure in these clubs, Larry also enjoyed Julia Child's cooking, sharing his own creations and stories with his family and friends, and participating in local chili cook-offs on weekends.
Larry never met a stranger, always had a story to tell, and was a man of inexhaustible humor and wit - whose humor may, at times, be at the expense of you, but always with the intent to make you smile.
Above all else, Larry loved his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Cheryl Atherton and is survived by his loving wife, Jean Rose; his children, Wendi Bassett and husband Matt, Kyle Wilkinson and wife Teresa, and Kym Eichler and husband David; and by his grandchildren, Christian Bassett, Matthew Bassett Jr., Cruiser Wilkinson, Caitlyn Sells, Austin Eichler, Isabelle Wilkinson, Charlotte Wilkinson. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Lucian Bassett, Matty Bassett, Hailey Bassett, Laney Bassett, Abbey Bassett, Stryker Wilkinson, Hadley Sells, and Cameron Sells.
Larry often said that family and his love of the Lord guided his life and reminded him where he came from and the way he should live. He will be remembered for his boundless spirit, his devotion to his community, his adventurous nature, and the laughter he brought to those around him.
A Graveside Service will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, Texas 78218, on April 27, 2026, at 12:00 pm.
