Laurence was born in Logan, Utah on October 11, 1934 to L. Mark and Augusta Madsen Neuberger and grew up in the beautiful Cache Valley of Utah. He graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Economics, and also served as a missionary for two years for his church prior to graduation. He was honored as a Distinguished ROTC graduate and then entered the Army as a Second Lieutenant upon graduation. He later earned a Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma. He married his college sweetheart, Sally Cheney, and together they raised three outstanding sons. Assignments took them to Sandia Base, NM; Frankfurt, Germany; Ft. Lewis, WA; Viet Nam; Seoul, Korea; and Ft. Sam Houston, TX. During his twenty year Army career, Laurence was awarded the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Ribbons and numerous other commendations.
Upon retirement as a Lt. Colonel, Laurence became the Director of Human Resources for Marriott Hotels, a position he held for fourteen years. He was awarded "The Most Outstanding Human Resource Director for Marriott World Wide" for two consecutive years.
Laurence was also an extremely faithful member in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he served in many capacities. He was called to serve as a Bishop twice, and then as the Stake President of the San Antonio East Stake. His life was defined by his deep love of family, friends, church, and country.
Laurence was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He truly loved people, and people loved him. He was like the Pied Piper gathering new friends everywhere he went with no regard to their status in life. He will be remembered for his gentle ways, constant smile, understanding and kindness to others, and for the ability to heal human hearts. He had an unwavering spiritual strength and was a shining beacon for others needing direction in their lives.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Sally, his sons, Todd and wife Lori-Lee of St. Louis, MO; Greg and wife Roxann of San Antonio, TX; and Chad and wife Cheryl of Lexington SC, and his 12 grandchildren whom he loved deeply. He will continue to live in the hearts and minds of a multitude of people through his shining example of what was possible through the giving of God's love. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Porter Loring North.
