Born on September 23, 1940, in San Antonio, Lee was a proud San Antonian, attended Lanier High School and whose life was defined by devotion to family, hard work, compassion, and quiet strength. He married his high school sweetheart and lifelong love, Amelia Navarette, on January 11, 1960. Together they shared a wonderful marriage and raised six children: Lee Hurtado (Rose), Diane Hernandez, Rose Mary Mireles (Robert), Raul Hurtado, Albert Hurtado (Mary) and Angela Hurtado (Rudy).
Lee was a loving grandfather to fourteen grandchildren: Liborio Hurtado IV, Michael Hurtado (Liz), Joseph Rodriguez, Ashley Hernandez, Avery Hurtado, Amber Hurtado, Ryan Mireles, George Vaca, Saul Hernandez, Miranda Hurtado, Arianna Hurtado-Lujan (Nate), Seth Hurtado, Noah Vaca and Jakob Vaca as well as his great grandchildren: Paul, Amelia, Aliyanna, Adrian, and Kamira. He loved being surrounded by his family, sharing stories, laughter and family moments together such as holidays.
He is reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Amelia N. Hurtado; his parents, Liborio Hurtado Sr. and Inez Pedraza Hurtado; and his sister Refugia H. Silva. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister Estella H. Deleon, and brothers Roberto Hurtado (Maria Luisa), Celso Hurtado, and Raul Hurtado (JoAnn) as well as many extended family and friends.
Lee was a man of remarkable intelligence and humor. He loved reading newspapers and history, watching historical programs and the daily world and local news. He also loved watching sports ranging from the Olympics, San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Cowboys and high school sports. He had a sharp mind, a quick wit and a strong sense of humor.
Known for his great work ethic, Lee did not retire until the age of 77 years, working for the City of San Antonio early on and then as an independent contractor for the San Antonio Express-News for 48 incredible years each and every day. Lee was also known for being generous and caring. He was always willing to help those in need with a homecooked meal from his beloved wife, sparing a few dollars, a place to stay or simply a helping hand. His kindness touched many who worked for him or simply knew or encountered him often quietly and without recognition.
Though his family mourns his passing, they will celebrate a life filled with sacrifice, love, and laughter. Lee's legacy will continue through the family he cherished and the many memories he leaves behind.
The Hurtado family thanks all family and friends for their prayers, support and love during this time of sorrow. Also wanted a huge thank you to Anchorage Hospice and the entire staff (Gabby-RN, Desiree-LVN, & Refugio-CAN) for their comforting care and attention they provided for our father.
