

He was born in Glasgow, Kentucky on August 9, 1933 to Thomas S. West, Sr. and Velma Ary West. He attended elementary and junior high schools in Three Rivers, Texas.
His family moved to San Antonio in 1946. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1950 and received his B.A. in Business Administration from Trinity University in 1954.
After graduating from Trinity, he went to work for Ewing-Hassel Cattle Company, then owned and operated a restaurant on South Presa Street. Louis joined his father, Thomas S. West, Sr., brother, Thomas S. West, Jr. and brother, Jerry A. West, at West Petroleum Corporation.
Louis was President of West Petroleum Corporation up until the time of his death. He accomplished all of this while having Muscular Dystrophy. He was the longest known surviving person with this disease.
Louis married Johnney Ruth VorPahl West in San Antonio, Texas in 1964. They would have celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary on September 22, 2010. They resided in New Braunfels, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas S. Sr. and Velma West, and brother, Jerry A. West.
He is survived by his wife, Johnney Ruth VorPahl West; brother, Thomas S. West, Jr.; sister-in-law, Coy West; brother-in-law, Franklin VorPahl of Bastrop, LA; sisters-in-law; Barbara Cain of The Woodlands and Mary Lynn Voss of San Antonio. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Jeanette West Hannasch, Kathy West Gallaspy, Terri West Perkins, Tiffany West Cheraif, Emily Eheim, Stephen VorPahl, Richard VorPahl, Sherry McHargue; great-niece, Brianna Perkins and other great nieces and nephews.
