Michael graduated from Fairhope High School in Fairhope, AL, and then joined the Navy. He served for four years before deciding to receive his BA in Economics, Cum Laude, from the University of South Alabama in Mobile.
Michael then joined the US Air Force, serving 17 honorable years before retiring. While in the Air Force, he received his Masters in International Relations from Boston University, applying that knowledge in assignments around the world. He achieved a first-degree black belt in Kung Jung Mu Sul, a Korean martial art, and was multilingual, learning Russian at the Defense Language Institute.
After his retirement, Michael worked as a management consultant for KPMG, later Bearing Point and then Deloitte, in San Antonio, where he significantly contributed to the closure and privatization of Brooks City-Base, among other projects. When not managing others, Michael participated in the Society for Creative Anachronism, following the path of chivalry as Lord Michael of Kendal, a man of honor and gallantry. He was known for his knowledge of wines and his ability to turn a phrase; he was especially proud of receiving the Blackfox Award for his historical accounts of the Barony of Bjornsborg in the Society. He was an avid University of Alabama football fan.
He never stopped learning, formally or informally; during his retirement he completed a law degree from St. Mary's University in 2013. He was a quick and agile wit, kind with his words, modest in his actions, and a mentor to many in both his personal and professional lives.
Where he loved, he loved strong; where he was a friend, he was a friend for all times. As he said: "So much unfinished business." Not so much regret, as a life full of intelligence and exploration that was still very much in progress.
Michael will be forever missed by his son, Steven Parr, of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Victoria Parr, of Cheshire, CT; sister, Michele Parr, of Birmingham, AL; and numerous friends from all aspects of his life.
