Malcolm Earle “Mac” Murff went to be with the Lord on March 12, 2021. He was born September 22, 1928 in Calhoun City, Mississippi. Mac was the seventh child out of eight born to Howard and Lillian (Ellard) Murff.
He accepted Jesus as his savior at an early age. As a teenager he attended a Baptist summer youth camp, at Ridgecrest, North Carolina where God impressed upon him the importance of living a godly life.
After attending college for one year, he ran low on funds and decided to join the Air Force in 1948. Although it wasn’t his initial intent to have a career in the military, he ended up serving for twenty years before retiring in 1968. He spent his initial enlistment in Germany, returning home in early 1952 to Calhoun City for a visit when he happened to meet Dorothy “Dot” VanLandingham and asked her out for a date. After a short courtship they were married on June 7, 1952. The Air Force sent them to many places, including Japan, Turkey, and Okinawa before Mac retired in 1968 as a Senior Master Sergeant in San Antonio. A few months later, he started a job with the National Security Agency in Maryland, adding another 10 years of government service to his twenty years in the Air Force.
After retirement, Mac and Dot bought a small farm in south Alabama and lived there for three years before deciding that farm life was too much work and a little too isolated. They returned to their beloved San Antonio and stayed.
Mac gave much of his time to the church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School director, church bus driver, usher and deacon. He was a family man who not only loved being a father but also being a grandfather, spending time with his grandchildren whenever he could. His grandchildren have fond memories of Granddaddy’s Saturday morning waffles and camping trips. They also remember how well he could pray!
Mac is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Dot Murff; two sons, Ronald Earle Murff and wife, Gloria and Brian Scott Murff and wife, Lynn. Other survivors include grandchildren, Andrew, Rachel, Rebecca, Brian, and Alyssa, as well as great-grandchildren, Eli, Jeremiah, and Bella Murff, Lucy and Addie Brothers, and Ashlyn and Braden Middleton. Siblings that pre-deceased him were sister, Joan (Welch) and brothers, Randall Murff, Fred Murff, Jim Murff, Billy Murff, Gene Murff, and Robert Murff.
Services will be held at Porter Loring Mortuary North. There will be a visitation time with family and friends on Friday, April 16 at 12:00 noon, followed by the funeral service honoring Mac at 1:00 p.m. and interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to SAMMinistries, Meals on Wheels, or the Southern Baptist International Mission Board.
In order to keep everyone safe and healthy, we kindly ask that you wear a mask while attending the service and maintain social distance.
