Marcos was one of the special friends I made over the years at Hotel Emma.  We had many interesting and inspiring conversations.  Will miss seeing him very much.

I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to become friends with Marcos. My wife and I met him by chance while living in San Antonio years ago. We were out for a walk in Southtown and decided to stop at Liberty Bar for a drink. Marcos was working as a waiter there at the time, but was off-shift. He sat at the bar, quietly reviewing some very impressive architectural photos he’d recently taken. We happened to be looking for a photographer to commission for a project for my alma mater at the time.  As I’m a total introvert, my wife took the reigns and initiated  conversation with Marcos. From the moment we met, I knew he was one of the good ones and we instantly clicked; he was always so warm and enthusiastic. Even though he’d never photographed anything professionally, he fully embraced the challenge and new experience, which is one of the things I admired most about Marcos. He was always ready and game to embrace life and did so with respect, reverence, class, and vigor.  For me, these qualities were exemplified in his willingness to start a pop-up restaurant with friends, to play drums at an impromptu street concert (even though he didn’t play the drums to my knowledge), and to go camping alone at Big Bend, describing at how invigorating and exciting it was to be alone and in nature.  Those are just a few examples I personally have, amongst many, of how Marcos lived his values. He was a truly a great person and I very much enjoyed his company and perspective. I’m honored and humbled that he was willing to be my friend and share some of his time on this plane of existence with me.  I hope that his adventure is continuing, wherever he may be, and that someday we meet again.  Adios for now amigo.

Querida Bris: mi más sentido pésame, no hay palabras que puedan aliviar el dolor tan grande por la pérdida de un ser querido, especialmente de tu hijo, le pido a Dios que te dé la fortaleza que necesitas.
Mi hijo Billy Valenzuela es muy amigo de tus hijos, tenemos casi el mismo tiempo de ser amigas tú y yo, que ellos, está muy triste  desde que recibió la noticia.

The world has lost a sweet soul. Marcos was  rare breed of person whose calm and caring demeanor put strangers at ease and kept friends by his side. I’ll miss our casual chats, our deep discussions, and his infectious smile. My heart goes out to his family who are surely beside themselves with grief.  

When I met Marcos a few years back, I was blown away by how much his voice sounded like Gregory Peck! Marcos chuckled after I told him that he should move to Hollywood to do voice over work. I think because he was younger than me, he may have not known who Gregory Peck was so he promised that he would watch him in one of my favorite movies, To Kill A Mockingbird so that he could listen for himself.  Marcos was one of those rare human beings that can walk into a room and you just like and enjoy talking to and listening to him.  I look forward to the day we meet again but until then I will miss you every day.
