Marcus Semmelmann, age 90, of San Antonio, passed away on June 24th 2025. Marcus was born in San Antonio, Texas to parents Marcus Pius and Mattie Lange Semmelmann on July 30th 1934. In 1956, at age 22, Marcus joined the Navy and served on the destroyer USS LAWS as an Apprentice Radio Operator. After being honorably discharged from his service, Marcus went to work for Southwestern Bell/AT&T where he worked for 41 years and retired as a third line manager. He married Barbara Turner, whom he met while working at Southwestern Bell, on August 13th 1960 in San Antonio, Texas and they remained married for 60 years. They both loved traveling in their motor home and had made it to all 50 states during their times of travel. During this time he also served as the mayor of Leon Valley from 1974 to 1978, and then again from 1994 to 1998. Marcus also served on the board of VIA Transportation and was involved with the operations of both the Chamber of Commerce and the Heart Association.
Marcus was a deeply loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. His care and devotion to his family were unwavering throughout his life. He provided for his family with quiet strength, and his love was especially evident in times of need. This devotion shone most clearly in the later years as he stood faithfully by the side of his beloved wife of 60 years when she began to struggle with dementia. He gently helped her begin each day and ensured she ended each night feeling safe, secure, and loved. His presence was her comfort, and his love never wavered.
Marcus’ generosity extended far beyond his immediate family. He gave freely to his extended family, friends, and community—not seeking recognition but out of a sincere desire to help and serve others. His life was one of selflessness, guided by love, commitment, and a quiet enduring grace.
Marcus is preceded in death by his parents Marcus and Mattie Semmelmann, his loving wife of 60 years Barbara, his brother George Semmelmann, his sister-in-law Cindy Semmelmann, and grandson Christopher Semmelmann.
Marcus is survived by his children Sherry Sands (Dale) and Robert Semmelmann (Cyndi), brothers Frank Semmelmann, Stanley Semmelmann (Pati), sister-in-law Barbara Semmelmann, three grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
