Margaret Ann Helm Casey, age 99, of San Antonio passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. She was born in Mart, Texas to Dr. Lee W. Helm and Willie Bohannon Helm on April 5, 1917 and was reared and educated in Waco.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Casey, Jr. and siblings, Kitty Lee Lance and Dr. Lee W. Helm, Jr. She is survived by her brother, Dr. George Edmund Helm; her sons, Patrick Joseph Casey and wife, Ann, George Michael Casey, Timothy Edmund Casey and wife, Inge, Dennis Lee Casey and wife, Lucy, Terence Paul Casey, and Brian Christopher Casey; daughter, Kathleen Ann Casey Manna and husband, Phillip; grandchildren, Jennifer Casey, Elizabeth Casey de los Santos and husband, Michael, Denise Paetz and husband, Jeff, and Kathleen Fernandes and husband, Alroy; and great-grandchildren, John, Claire, and Celine Fernandes and Gabe Paetz.
Margaret has direct ancestral ties to early settlers in the Republic of Texas. Her great grandfather was "Bosque" John McLennan, whose father, Laughlin, and uncle, Neil McLennan, settled in the area that today is named after them: McLennan County.
On April 1, 1936 Margaret married George, also of Waco, at the parish of Saint Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Waco. As jobs required, they moved a number of times, especially following World War II. These moves included Fort Worth, Dallas, San Antonio, Waco, Fort Smith, Arkansas, and finally back to San Antonio in 1950 where they lived the rest of their lives.
As the family grew, Margaret remained busy rearing her seven children. In the early 1950's, she supplemented the family income by working as an advertising salesperson for The Northside Recorder, a neighborhood newspaper. Margaret worked at the Recorder for 28 years before retiring in March, 1981.
After George retired from Civil Service for the United States Army, Margaret and George were able to take up travel opportunities that had escaped them for so many decades. Their travel destinations included road trips across the continental United States, trips to Hawaii, Alaska and Europe, and many Caribbean cruises.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 19, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
