Dr. Muñoz died as he lived: valiantly and beloved. Born and raised in San Antonio, he graduated in 1972 from Alamo Heights High School and later attended Texas A&M receiving a Bachelor of Science - Safety Engineering degree in 1987. He went on to become one of the first Fire Protection Safety Engineers for the City of San Antonio Fire Department. Feeling the desire to help others, he decided to attend medical school at University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas, graduating in 1996 specializing in anesthesiology and was employed with Star Anesthesia.
He was a gentle giant in the truest sense; generous, kind, always doing for others. He was a man of God with a servant's heart; helping his family, his wife who was always there for him and stood by him in his time of need, his mom and dad, and to many of his nephews and nieces he was a father figure for them; he always loved to go to the shooting range regardless how he felt if you called him to say hey lets go shooting; he loved family times of being together and the Jewish holidays as it brought joy to his heart to have everyone together to celebrate the holiday.
He was an avid Aggie alumni supporter making time to watch Aggie football games. He had an incredible passion in life for helping others. He lived his life with an unflagging commitment to his patients. He cared immensely about giving to others and making the world a better place through hard work and advocacy. Being a doctor allowed him the opportunity to provide services for those who could not afford to pay for them.
He was a patient, generous, thoughtful, inquisitive, compassionate and creative man. He had a passion for music. He would listen to Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach along with Celtic music. He also loved Ballet. Best of all, he was a Trekkie and Star Wars fanatic.
He was interested in World War II history and the atrocities during that era. He was Jewish and was a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. His grandparents immigrated from Russia and Poland to escape from religious persecution.
He was a member of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists, American Medical Association, UTMB School of Medicine SOM Alumni Association, The Association of Former Students of Texas A&M, and National Rifle Association.
He was dearly loved by his family and will be deeply missed. He will be forever in our hearts and forever in our prayers. He is survived by his wife, Esther Muñoz of 12 years, his parents, John and Elaine Muñoz, brothers and sisters, Debbie (Charlie) Wood, Morris (Janelle) Muñoz, Dr. Jeffrey Muñoz (Karla Bravo), Danny (Cindy) Muñoz, and Kimberly (John) Davenport. His nieces and nephews, Ruthie (Cade) Rensmeyer, David (Jill) Walker, Tara (Michael) Mayorga, Kevin Walker, Sarah Muñoz, Shea Muñoz (fiancé Tim Ellis), Samantha Muñoz, Elyse Muñoz (fiancé Noah Halpert), Avram Muñoz, Ethan Muñoz, Hannah Davenport, Jacob Davenport, and Vanessa Muñoz. Great nieces and nephews, Clint Walker, Ashley Walker, Ryan Rensmeyer, Kira Rensmeyer, Jeannie Mayorga, and Ari Muñoz, and is also survived by stepchildren Jeremy Elich and Amanda Jones, stepgrandchildren Tyler Elich and Maddox Jones, and relative Rosie Muñoz.
Graveside services were held on April 7, 2016 at Rodfei Sholom Cemetery officiated by Rabbi Aryeh Scheinberg.
