Mary G. Calvert, age 91, of San Antonio, Texas transitioned to her spiritual life peacefully at her daughter’s home in Grapevine, Texas. Born in Victoria, Texas on October 9, 1929, 17 years later she journeyed to Los Angeles, CA where she graduated from James Garfield high School. Mary eventually moved back to Texas and settled in San Antonio. Here she furthered her education at San Antonio College with the hope this would launch new directions in her career.
On the 31st of July, 2002 the Commissioners Court of Bexar County proclaimed “Mary Calvert Appreciation Day” to recognize her 28+ years of employment with Bexar County. Her role was as a District Court Clerk and then Court Coordinator for the 225th District Children’s Court. Mary’s accomplishments were many but her most memorable and appreciative role was in the creation of the Child Abuse and Neglect Court. Many of her peers knew her role as the “Little General” throughout the court. Her recognition for her role in this program was received by President George Bush (Then Governor). Mary’s Annual Orphan Christmas Teddy Bear program was known by many. Each adopted child from the 225th received a new teddy bear in commemoration of their new journey. As witty as Mary was, in the office and at home, people held back disagreeing with her because in any argument she would declare, “Don’t mess with me cause “I Know The Law”.
Mary had a passion for high heels, music, dancing, fine spirits and travel. She was elegant and had a keen eye for art. Her coveted treasures throughout her world travels were prominently displayed throughout her home. Whether it was Vegas, Italy, France or Hawaii her friends and family always had a funny story to share. Mary was also an avid bowler and a proud member of the weekly bowling league at the Ponderosa Bowl. Her friends and family always knew NOT to mess with Mary’s bowling night! Many folks knew Mary had a green thumb when it came to plants. Every weekend she would be up early tending her garden and pruning her prized roses. Her favorite flower was the Yellow Rose of Texas!
