

Our loving Mother, Mary Owens Hume Schermerhorn, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2015. Mary struggled with dementia in her later years, but her great intellect, tremendous wit, and love of her family always shined through.
Mary was born in Louisville, Kentucky on June 28, 1921. She is preceded in death by her parents, William Garvin Hume and Caroline DeButts Gray Hume, her siblings, Lucy H. Moore and William G. Hume, her son, Stephen W. Schermerhorn, and her daughter, Caroline G. Anz.
She is survived by her children, Edith O. Gibson, Eleanor M. Schermerhorn, Mary Paulette Hawkins, and Robert A. Schermerhorn. She is also survived by her grandchildren, William J. Anz, Madeline C. Slay, Dr. Monica C. Anz-Cavazos, David G. Anz, Dr. Alan G. Anz, Christopher R. Johnston, Amanda D. Gibson, Catherine C. Langston, and Claire M. Schermerhorn. Mary is also survived by many great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews as well.
Mary distinguished herself in many ways during her lifetime. She loved family history and instilled that love in her children and grandchildren. While still raising her children, she was graduated Summa Cum Laude from Incarnate Word College with both Bachelor and Master degrees, taught learning disabled children, and was recognized as a Point of Light for her work with Child Advocates of San Antonio (CASA). Other awards included the JC Penney Golden Rule, San Antonio Woman of the Year, and Alumni of the Year Awards.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 12th from 6:00pm to 7:00pm with recitation of the Rosary at 7:00pm at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3303 Urban Crest Dr.
A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 13th at 11:00am at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Mary will be interred at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's honor can be made to Child Advocates of San Antonio at casa-satx.org, or a charitable organization of your choice.
