
Mary Ruth Spencer of San Antonio, age 97, died, Saturday, April 20, 2002. Mrs. Spencer was one of the Charter Members at Esplanade Gardens, and participated in most activities. Mary Ruth Sipple was born in Noblesville, Indiana, about 25 miles from Indianapolis. She, her two sisters and parents lived on a farm. In 1936, Robert Earl Spencer and Mary Ruth were married. Mr. & Mrs. Spencer were both employed at Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Company. One of her sisters was also employed there. Most of their married life was spent in Indianapolis. Robert passed away in 1961. One of Mary Ruth's fondest memories is standing on the roof and watching Charles Lindberg fly over near the beginning of his famous flight. Mary Ruth and her sister began traveling together after both became widows. In the beginning they spent their winters in the Rio Grande Valley, then began visiting San Antonio where her cousin Marva Jane Cooper lived. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Spencer. Mary Ruth is survived by Mrs. Cooper and her husband Charles and their children, Sandra Hernandez, and Linda Fletcher; grandchildren, Sean Fletcher and Kyle Fletcher, and Brandon & Brandy Hernandez.
