

Mary Matthew Twardowski (nee Hedwig) was born in Brenham, TX to Chester and Maryanna Murski Twardowski on December 22, 1927. She was the youngest of eight children. At an early age she had a love of learning and dedication to her Catholic faith. She began her education at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Brenham, TX. At the age of thirteen she attended Our Lady of the Lake High School and continued her education at Our Lady of the Lake College for three years. She then began her teaching career. Her work towards a Bachelor of Arts Degree was completed in 1954 by attending classes each summer. In 1963, she completed her Master of Sciences degree from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana and in 1972 was conferred a PhD from the University of Maryland in College Park , Maryland.
Her first teaching assignment was at Lindsay School, Lindsay, TX (1947-50). She continued teaching assignments which included St. Pius School, Pasadena, TX (1950-51), St. Mary’s Elementary School, San Antonio, TX (1951-54), Providence High School, San Antonio, TX (1954-57), St. Mary’s High School, Ponca City, OK (1957-61), Our Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, TX (1961-67 and 1972-76), Edgewood ISD, San Antonio, TX (1976-81), Southside ISD, San Antonio, TX (1981-85) and San Antonio College (ACCD), San Antonio, TX (1985-93).
Mary was a member of the Congregation of Divine Providence for 35 years. She continued to immerse herself in her faith community after her service with the Congregation and was a benefactor to numerous charities and organizations.
Mary was an avid sports fan which included the San Antonio Spurs for basketball, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in all sports and her professional football loyalty was with the Washington Commanders.
Mary is survived by her sister-in-law Stephanie Twardowski, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and close lifelong friend Sister Mary Florentine Mazurkiewicz. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters and brothers-in-law Pelagia (Stanley) Bilski, Maggie (Billie) Bilski, Martha (Albin) Kubeczka; brothers and sisters-in-law Joe (Barbara) Twardowski, Willie (Agnes) Twardowski, Pete Twardowski and Max Twardowski.
The family of Mary Twardowski wishes to thank the Congregation of Divine Providence for their kindness and support in her continued faith journey. The family would also like to give a special thank you to the McCoullough Hall care team for their loving care for the past six years.
A Rosary will be recited on Friday, July 29 at 10:30 am followed by an 11:00 am Mass of the Resurrection at Our Lady of the Lake Annunciation Chapel, 603 SW 24th Street, San Antonio, TX 78207 with inurnment at San Fernando II Mausoleum.
