Matias Louis Hodges Sr. born April 20, 1912 passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 9, 2012 nineteen days after celebrating his 100th birthday. He was surrounded by his family and his ever-faithful little dog Marcia.
Matias felt so happy and blessed to have reached such a milestone in his life.
He was born in Gonzales, Texas to Isaac G. Hodges Sr. & Ella Mathis.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Adelina, his son Iman, his parents, nine siblings including one son, one daughter and their mother.
Matias was employed by Kelly Air Force Base for 45 years and at the same time he pursued his interest in law enforcement devoting his spare time to completing numerous courses at San Antonio College and Sam Houston State University Criminal Justice Center.
After retiring from Kelly he established United Investigations Bureau.
His duties as a Police Officer began with the Bexar County Sheriff's Department, Shavano Park Police Department and Elmendorf County. He eventually was elected as the Honorable Chief of Police in Elmendorf, serving faithfully for many years and still today he is fondly remembered as "THE CHIEF".
He was a gracious and humble man and will always be remembered as a loving Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, a Servant to the Community and a friend and mentor to many.
The Chief never met a stranger; he was always willing to help anyone in every way possible. He enjoyed meeting and speaking to people from all walks of life. He was a kind and gentle soul who always believed in and taught forgiveness. He could usually be found reading his bible and always kept it by his side.
He is survived by his children: Matias Jr. (Louis) of Bryan, Texas, Norberto (Tony), Michael, Pamela of New York City and Adelina II (Nina); grandchildren: Joe, Wanda, Matias III & Celeste (BB); Sister, Mattie Hodges Pittman; Sister-in-law, Celia Kinney, numerous nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
The Chief lived by the two following short but very meaningful prayers: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference" and "Lord help me to remember that nothing is going to happen to me today that you and I together can't handle." Our Dad will be greatly missed and will remain in our hearts forever. The family will receive friends starting at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday May 15, 2012.
