Kay was a member of the inaugural program preparing Primary Care Nurse Practitioners for the Air Force Nurse Corps at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas, graduating in 1975. Among her first assignments as a Nurse Practitioner was providing care for the cadets at the United States Air Force Academy. She was dually certified as both a nurse practitioner and a physician assistant.
Following retirement from the Air Force as a LtCol with a Meritorious Service Medal, Kay held nurse practitioner roles serving children in the San Antonio Independent School District and elderly veterans in Kerrville, Texas with the VA system.
Kay was a founding member of the San Antonio Nurses in Advanced Practice. She also was instrumental in establishing an early educational meeting for Air Force Nurse Corps members that became an ongoing national conference.
Her loving, caring nature and generosity to others was evident in the volunteer works she undertook. Providing meals to the hungry, packing and distributing backpacks to those in need and efforts to aid homeless female veterans in San Antonio with the Society of Air Force Nurses are but a few examples.
