Michael Anthony Carew entered peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on August 3, 2023 at age 83. He was a 15 year survivor of ALS and he never once complained about how the disease cost him a more normal life.
Mike was born to Lillian Clay Carew and Henry Grattan (Bob) Carew on May 10, 1940 in Palestine, Texas. Mike grew up in Corpus Christi where he graduated from Roy Miller High School. He had outstanding athletic achievement ability in football, was a recipient of All State honor, played in the Texas All Star Game and attended the University of Houston on a football scholarship. In 1994, he was inducted into the Roy Miller Buccaneer Hall of Fame. While attending the University of Houston, he met his future wife, Brenda, and they were blessed to enjoy 60 years of marriage spending the last 41 years of their married life in San Antonio raising their 2 children: Michael Carew, Jr and Christopher Carew. Mike’s work career was primarily in the area of Right of Way Acquisition with Valero Energy in San Antonio. He cherished his family and friends, always loved a good story, thought positive and had a lot of laughs. Mike enjoyed bird hunting, golf, loved the day he made a Hole in One. There were many outings with his children, grandchildren and friends on his bird lease in Yancey. He invited friends from high school to annual bird hunts and he cherished those gatherings. As ALS progressed, it did rob Mike of spending more precious time with his grandchildren and missing in person participation in their extracurricular activities. On the other hand, his Lord and Savior gave him ALS with slow progression allowing extra years to enjoy his friends and family.
Mike was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Lillian Carew, brother Bob Carew (Martha), brother Jim Carew and sister, Connie Clarkson (Bob), sister in law and brother in law Linda and Jack Rowland. Mike is survived by his wife Brenda, of 60 years; sons Michael, Jr. (Sharon Carew) and Christopher (Carol Carew); 4 grandchildren, Megan Carew Oedel (Bill), Kenedy Carew, Harrison Carew, Ava Carew and one great-grandson, Michael Kincaid Oedel, his brother, Hal (Barbara Carew), sister-in-law, Ofelia Jaime, Goddaughter, Tiffany Alvarez and numerous nieces and nephews.
His family wants to extend their gratitude to family, friends, neighbors who generously supported them throughout his illness. Special thanks to Dr. Carlayne Jackson, Klarus Hospice especially Barbara, Sara and Marina and the ALS Multidisciplinary Team.
May he rest in peace with the knowledge that we loved him well and he will be carried on in the hearts of all those he touched.
