Faith, Family, Friends, Cooking, Hunting and Fishing….in that order! This is what Michael Wilkes loved and this is what he did so well! Chances are you experienced something with Michael that you can relate to one or more of these things. And if you were one of the lucky ones you got them ALL!
Michael went to be with God on August 10, 2021.
Michael was born in Lubbock, Texas on May 3, 1960. He lived in Lubbock, Midland, Bryan as well as Morgan City, Louisiana during his childhood. He graduated from Bryan High School in 1978 and went to Texas A&M University where he graduated with a degree in Marketing.
Michael went to work for Luby’s Cafeterias, Inc. and had a successful career there including the Opening Crew and his beloved #11, the Luby’s Cafeteria at 911 SE Military Drive in San Antonio. Michael was the Manager there when it opened and he loved the people and places of the southside. Michael left Luby’s and became a pharmaceutical salesman for Astrazeneca where he was an unlikely success. But he had a gift with people that was undeniable and it proved to be one of his most successful traits!
Michael was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer in June of 2007. He began a battle that would last over 14 years. Constant chemotherapy/immunotherapy and clinical trials became his normal but many never knew. Often times people thought he had “finished” chemo or was in remission, but this warrior battled every day to stay around for his family…..who he loved with all his mighty heart!
Michael is survived by his loving wife of 32 years Molly, and his sons Matthew and Marshall. As well as his mother, Virginia Castleberry. Additional family include, Natalie and John Fayne Wilkes III, Debbie and Rudder Russo, Bridget and Mark Erben, Beverly and Monty Erben and many nieces and nephews. Michael as preceded in death by his father John Fayne Wilkes, Jr.
