He was born on February 19, 1931 in Spring Creek, Louisiana to William Homer and Sybil Mae (Sterling) Newman. He graduated from Spring Creek High school (1948), Louisiana State University (1952 – Bachelor of Science in Agriculture), and the Air Force institute of Technology at the University of Pittsburgh (1961 – Masters Degree in Business Administration). He also graduated from Squadron Officers School, Air Command & Staff College, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Having left the family farm to attend college and participate in ROTC, Minton was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force in May 1952 and retired as a Colonel, 30 years later. Following his military retirement, Minton began a second career at USAA and remained there for 9 years.
Minton was a steadfast and faithful servant to his Lord and Savior. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He left a mark on all that he interacted with and will be missed.
Minton is survived by his wife, Peggy Sue Newman and children: Minton (Jean) Newman, Jr., Charlotte Newman, Lori (Eric) Cox, Wanda (Mike) Wilkerson, and Debbie (Doug) Ertz. Also by daughters-in-law Sharon (McKamie) Newman and Paula (Clark) Newman. Additionally, his legacy lives on through his 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Minton is preceded in death by his wife of 53 glorious years, Beatrice Varnado Newman. Also preceding him in death are his two sons, Nathan Alan Newman and Gary Lynn Newman; brother Wayne Homer Newman and sister Sally Velma (Newman) Hutchinson, and many other family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Enduring Love Fund at First Baptist Church of Universal City (1401 Pat Booker Rd., Universal City TX 78148).
