Ortensia "Orty" Bishop

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 36 years, Thomas P. Bishop, her parents Auerillo de los Santos Aguilar and Agripina Castro de Aguilar, and her eight siblings: Fernando, Jesse, Aurelio Jr., Alfonso, Thomas, Julia, Juan, and Pedro Aguilar.

Orty is survived by her daughter, Marcella McBride Putman (spouse Wesley Putman); three grandchildren: Amber (Putman) Sladek, Garrett Putman, and Loren Putman; two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Colin Sladek; and two sisters, Agripina Aguilar Bonenberger and Alicia Aguilar.

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Orty was the youngest of 11 children. She graduated from John Marshall High School and became a registered nurse, working at University Hospital before joining a Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgeon’s practice until her retirement in 1994.

A devoted grandmother and long-time member of Blessed Sacrament Church (since 1979), Orty and her husband Tom were active in beautifying the church grounds and were known for planting several trees in honor of deceased parishioners. Over 20 years ago, they planted two trees in front of the Blessed Sacrament Child Development Center in honor of their grandchildren. Orty and Tom were also founding members of the Blessed Sacrament Rosary Group, where they devotedly prayed for family and friends for over 17 years.

Orty’s love extended to her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and the children of her best friend. She was known for her unique sense of humor, love of classic rock, and witty responses. She lived life on her own terms and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A Rosary for Ortensia will be held Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 600 Oblate Dr, San Antonio, TX 78216. A Mass will take place at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 17501 Nacogdoches Rd, San Antonio, TX 78266.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Orty’s memory to Blessed Sacrament Child Development Center, 102 Sharon Dr, San Antonio, TX 78216 where they will be building a garden in her honor.
