

He was a graduate of the 1951 Class of New Braunfels High School and a member of the Class of '51 Association of New Braunfels High School that still meets quarterly. Mr. Cantu was part of the 1951 State Championship Football team, All-State Football Team 2 years, and King of the Iron Men Squad playing offense and defense.
He was also an active participant of Lions Club baseball in New Braunfels.
While at Texas Lutheran College, Mr. Cantu was captain of the football team in 1952.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a Petty Officer on BB 63 USS Missouri, and was Fleet Boxing Champ in 1956. Mr. Cantu received an honorable discharge in January 1957. He was a member of the GI Forum in San Marcos, and the US Navy Reserve. During 1971, he served with distinction in Vietnam.
He spent 38 years working for Civil Service at East Kelly. During this time he went TDY to 16 foreign locations.
Mr. Cantu was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in San Antonio for 33 years, serving as a Eucharist Minister and an Usher for the 11:00 service.
He was an assistant Scout Master for Troop 307 for 3 years, a member of Churchill High School Band Parents Association for 10 years, and a committee member for International Black and White Ball for 24 years.
Mr. Cantu is survived by his wife, Maria Elena Cantu; children, Elizabeth Rachelle Cantu of San Marcos; and Oscar Luis Cantu, Jr. and wife Karri Jean; grandchildren, Isabella Rose Cantu, and Analisa Elena Cantu; mother-in-law, Guadalupe Rodriguez "Mama", all of San Antonio; brothers, Jose Viviano Cantu and wife Beatrice of New Braunfels, Gustavo Cantu of Seguin, Carlos Cantu of New Braunfels, and Arturo Cantu and wife Alicia; sisters, Beatrice Villarreal; Graciela Sanchez and husband Gilbert, all of San Antonio, and Sidelia Valdez and husband, Valentine; sisters-in-law, Lucinda Cantu, all of New Braunfels, and Rose Cantu of Philadelphia, PA; 41 nieces and nephews and over 100 great nieces and nephews.
