

Mr. Matthews was born Oct. 14, 1941, in the town of Poth in Wilson County, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, A. H. Matthews, a contractor, Ione Groves Matthews, a teacher.
He was a 1960 graduate of Poth High School, and attended St. Mary's University in San Antonio, earning a degree in accounting. In retirement, his expertise with numbers made it ideal for him to serve on the board of North View Towers Home Owners Association.
As a professional accountant, Mr. Matthews worked for oil companies in San Antonio and Houston, and lastly for a toys and novelties company in San Antonio. He lived in Houston approximately 15 years and was a resident of the Temple Terrace area near downtown. Returning to San Antonio in the 1990s, his most recent home was in the Shearer Hills/Ridgeview area near North Star Mall.
Mr. Matthews was an avid reader, a devotee of politics, and a self-taught historian of all things San Antonio. A sage raconteur, he knew the origins and particulars of landmarks, businesses, and cultural icons, as well as stories about many deceased, and living, Texans. He was especially knowledgeable about San Antonio's quaint King William district, and the development of the downtown River Walk. He was a tenant of a grand 19th century King William home when it was a boarding house during the 1960s.
Mr. Matthews is survived by a sister, Betty Ann Matthews Musch of Carrollton, Texas; two brothers, Archie H., of Dillon, Montana, John Edward, of Poth; nieces Patricia Musch, Karen Musch Leidner, Cheryl Musch Koff, Teresa Matthews Simpson, Ione Matthews, Shannon Pape and nephews Michael Musch, Paul Matthews, and James Matthews and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews, and many lifetime friends in San Antonio, Houston and other Texas locations.
Private inurnment of ashes is planned at a later date in the city cemetery in Taylor, Texas.
