July 15, 1944 - January 5, 2022
Glendale, Arizona – Patsy Rae Varn Tweedy, died Wednesday, January 5, 2022, in Scottsdale, Arizona; Born July 15, 1944 in Columbia, South Carolina; she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Capers Mitchell, of Columbia, South Carolina.
Patsy is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years Donald Lee Tweedy; her daughters, LaRisa Rai Tweedy of Houston, Texas; Sherri Lee Varrieur of Sebring, Florida; Kelly Ann Lane and son-in-law Russell James Lane of Glendale, Arizona; her grandchildren, Haley Rae King, Garrett James Lane, Morgan Carol Elizabeth Lane; great grandson, Dakota Vernon King; brother, Joseph Capers Mitchell, Jr. She was preceded in death by her father Joseph Capers Mitchell and her mother Rosa Lee Varn Mitchell; sisters Mary Addison, Shirley Monday and JoAnn Ervin; and her grandchildren Austin Thomas Lane and Jordyn Elizabeth Lane.
Patsy Rae was as a proper, southern lady full of grace, of strong faith and was devoted to protecting and caring for her family. As a military wife she stood strong and raised her children while her husband respectfully served in the United States Army domestically and abroad. Settling in to their final duty station in San Antonio, Texas she raised her children to be strong, independent, yet kind women. She taught her children that kindness is not a weakness, yet a strength of character that permeates compassion, gratefulness and selflessness in all those that were blessed to know her.
She loved sports and was affectionately given the nickname “Sport” while coaching youth fast-pitch softball and attending her daughters school activities. She was always in the stands and was undoubtedly our biggest fan. She welcomed everyone in to her home with her warm hospitality preparing a meal for all that entered her kitchen. Her greatest accomplishment though was the many years of devotion to her husband of 60 years and her unyielding love for her children and grandchildren. She intentionally and gracefully instilled the importance of family values and traditions to those she loved and held dear. Her legacy will continue to live through us, in us and beyond us in our interactions with others. While her home was in Texas and Arizona, she’ll always be a South Carolina girl at heart.
If you ever met Patsy Rae Tweedy, you never forgot her as she left a lasting impression on the souls and hearts of each and every person who knew her. Service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, February 11, 2022, at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio; followed by a graveside burial at 11:15 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio.
