His family moved to San Antonio in 1968. Phillip attended Robert E Lee High School where he excelled both in school and tennis. As a youth, he was highly ranked in both singles and doubles, winning numerous tournaments across Texas. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Texas at Austin, receiving a BBA in Finance.
Phillip loved sports. He was a huge UT Longhorn fan and attended the Rose Bowl where they beat USC and were crowned the 2005 NCAA National Champions. He also attended multiple NCAA Final Four basketball games. He loved the Spurs and attended many games, including games at three of the Spurs’ championship series.
He liked to travel and spent several weeks in Germany and Switzerland, where he went to the base of the Eiger mountain and to the spot where Clint Eastwood filmed the movie, the Eiger Sanctum. He took many trips to Costa Rica, enjoyed the primitive setting and nature filled experiences, and brought back many pictures of the native birds and howler monkeys.
Phillip treasured the outdoors and visited Zion National Park, Glacier National Park, and Arenal Volcano National Park where he spent time hiking countless trails. For his 40th birthday, he was surprised with a helicopter ride and Champagne brunch to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
Growing up, he spent summer vacations travelling to Myrtle Beach for family reunions as well as other family trips across the country. Phillip loved spending time at his family’s condominium in Port Aransas and loved visiting the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center and Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture. He was an avid bird watcher and would inform family and friends of the names and traits of various birds he saw at the Birding Center as well as places he travelled. He also enjoyed fishing trips to Port Aransas where he enjoyed time with friends and participated in friendly fishing competitions.
Phillip loved music and regularly organized fun-filled live concert trips with friends – always resulting in great times.
He cut a wide swathe in social situations because of his charm and bearing. He will be missed by his nieces and nephews with whom he had a special relationship - they loved spending time with Uncle Phil! Although he never married, he had friends whose company he enjoyed and with whom he traveled.
He is survived by his father, Charles Jr.; his brothers Charles III (Madelon) and Jeffrey (Beverly); sister-in-law, Ginny; nephews, Austin, Russell and Warren; nieces, Lauren and Christiana; as well as aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen; his brother, Randy; and his beloved dog, Travis.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at 10:00 AM, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 600 Oblate Dr., San Antonio, TX 78216.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to the Audubon Society or the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, TX.
