She spent her childhood years on a ranch outside of Paris. Due to her father's insistence on pursuing higher education, Janie graduated from Texas State College for Women now TWU in Denton, Texas, with a major in homemaking and a minor in Spanish.
Employment was scarce during the Great Depression, so Janie moved to Reserve, New Mexico, to pursue her first teaching position. After a lifetime in education, she retired as a fifth grade teacher from Leila P. Cowart Elementary in Dallas.
Janie was attractive, bright, fiercely independent, and exceptionally resilient. This was evidenced by the fact that she was widowed three times but continued to embrace life. She was predeceased by John William Isom, Edwin Guy Armstrong and Tom Crouse.
Janie is survived by her only child, Mary Ann Franzke and husband, Chuck of San Antonio, and her sister, Mary Cecil Trew of Bryan. Other survivors include two granddaughters, Dr. Gtretchen Gabbert-Downs and husband, Daniel, and Gwen Baird and husband Mark; three great grandchildren and numerous other family members. Honoring Janie are those who continue to carry her name: Rebecca Jane Rice, niece, Gretchen Jane Gabbert-Downs, granddaughter, Lillian Jane Baird, great granddaughter, and Rachel Mathews, grand niece.
The family appreciates all those who supported Janie, including the Ladies Class at Sunset Ridge Church of Christ where she worshiped, the professional staff at the Forum, and the staff of Christus VNA Hospice. For many years,
Janie also was blessed to have many individual, private caregivers who showed exemplary competence and devotion.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Friends of Hospice P.O. Box 40487, SAT, 78229-0487 or to a charity benefiting children. This act of love would please Janie who loved children.
