Rebecca Xochitl Gartrell was a loving, caring, dedicated and hardworking wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend and ultrarunner. She left this world suddenly on February 7, 2021 at the young age of 48 doing what she loved the most, running across the state of Texas.
She was born to Wenceslao and Alicia Rodriguez on May 17, 1972 in Laredo, Texas. She married the love of her life, Keith, and together they raised their children in San Antonio, Texas. Keith and Rebecca were active members of the running, cycling and climbing communities in San Antonio, throughout Texas and across the United States. Rebecca's passion and calling in life was running ever since she was a child and in her lifetime she completed almost 100 ultramarathon distance races with numerous wins, was a two-time Ironman and enjoyed serving as a running coach and mentor to so many in her community.
Rebecca was larger than life, more than words can describe and touched anyone and everyone she met. She inspired others to be the best they could be even when they did not believe it themselves. She was a selfless servant, had an infectious smile and a beautiful soul. Family was everything to her and if you made it into her life, you were truly blessed and better for it. Rebecca and Keith loved traveling, rock climbing and just spending time together in the outdoors. She leaves behind a legacy of love and respect for one another, grit and determination and a can-do attitude that was infectious for so many.
Rebecca is proceeded in death by her sister Raquel Rodriguez. She is survived by her husband, Keith, children Esmeralda Arellano (husband Jereme) and Nicholas Gartrell, parents Wenceslao Jr and Alicia Rodriguez and Duane and Paula Gartrell, brother Wenceslao Rodriguez III (wife Kasia), sister Graciela Rodriguez, brother-in-law Neal Gartrell (wife Maggie), numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, there were causes near and dear to her. Due to COVID and the unfortunate current circumstances of so many, donations can be given in her memory to the Texas Suicide Prevention Collaborative (texassuicideprevention.org) or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).
In addition, a go fund me account has been established to supplement reward money that would be available for anyone who may come forward with information leading to the identification of the hit and run driver that took Rebecca’s life. Funds may be used towards rewards, investigation, and awareness communications. Any remaining proceeds will be donated to the organizations above. Thank you for your support as we help to find justice for Rebecca.
