At age 72, Rene C. Garcia, loving husband, father and grandfather, was called home to heaven after a brief illness on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, in San Antonio. Rene was born on November 11, 1941, (at 11:11AM) in Delmita, Texas to Matias Garcia, Sr. and Julianita Cavazos Garcia. He attended Pan American College, McNeese State University, and served in the U.S. Army. After serving as a peace officer with the Edinburg and McAllen Police Departments, Rene embarked on a successful 40 year career in the insurance industry, retiring from USAA. A natural athlete, Rene played semi-pro baseball with the Reynosa Broncos, and actively participated in individual and team sports throughout his life. Heavily involved in the tennis community, the Garcia family was named Texas Tennis Family of the Year in 1995.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Matias Garcia, Sr. and Julianita Cavazos Garcia, and sisters, Emma, Aida and Edna.
Rene is survived by, and will forever be missed by, his wife, Ellie Saldivar Garcia, his children, Rene Garcia, Jr. (Arminda), Rebecca Anna Garcia Pollock (Kevin), grandchildren, Rene Maximiliano, Emiliano Rene, Isabella Grace, and Emma Sofia, sisters, Elia, Viviana, and brother Matias, Jr., numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and an extended in-law family that considers him a blood brother.
His legacy is one of laughter, generosity, and friendship. We will miss his corny and repetitive jokes.
As a USAA retiree, Rene enjoyed volunteering with the Golden Eagles, especially on the Wounded Warrior Project.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Christus Santa Rosa Babcock Road, Medical Intensive Care Unit, especially Nurse Melissa, for the compassionate care provided to Rene.
The family will received friends on Monday, January 13, 2014 from 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 10703 Wurzbach.
