

He was born to Clarence and Eva Chamberlain Hansen on October 6, 1943, in Battle Creek, Michigan. Dick attended Martin High School in Laredo, Texas. He attended Tulane University in New Orleans and earned a B.A. and LL.B. from the University of Texas. In June 1968, he received his Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Texas.
He married Mary Frances Phelps Hansen on August 3, 1968. After being admitted to the Texas Bar in September 1968, he practiced corporate, taxation and general law. He was a member of the State Bar of Texas, member of the Texas Supreme Court, member of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, member of the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court, member of the Texas Young Lawyers Association, Board of Directors 1975-1979.
During active duty in the United States Army, as Captain, Judge Advocate General's Corps, he was stationed at the Judge Advocate General's School in Charlottesville, Virginia as an instructor. He was then assigned to Fort Hood, Texas as Assistant Staff Judge Advocate, Headquarters, III Corps.
Dick practiced law with the firm on Mann, Freed, Castillon and Kazen,later Mann, Freed, Hansen and Trevino in Laredo; was Senior Vice President and Chairman of the Trust Department at the Laredo National Bank from 1981-1986; and then entered private practice.
Honors received were the Order of the Coif, Bachelor of Laws with Honors, Phi Delta Phi. In 2000, he moved to San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Robert H. Phelps.
Richard is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Hansen of San Antonio; daughter, Kimberly Frances Selah and husband Gerald of San Antonio; grandson, Travis Selah; brother, Clarence Hansen and wife Mary of Austin; sisters-in-law, Peggy Phelps, and Christine Herrmann and husband Paul; nephews and niece, Truman Robert Phelps, Derek Herrmann, and Paula Herrmann.
