Richard is survived by his life partner, Erica; his beloved daughters Mia and Ella; his grandson Lazurus “Honey Boy”; his mother Sabina; his four brothers Carlos, Bobby, Jimmy, and Ruben; half-sisters Barbara and Dolores; stepdaughters Megan and Courtney; and nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Richard is preceded in death by his father Gumesindo, his brother Rene, and his half-sister, Hilda.
Richard was born and raised in San Antonio and graduated from John Jay High School, class of 1989. “Ricky” never met a stranger, and with his charisma, sense of humor, and easy laugh, he made many dear friends that he remained in close contact with for decades.
Richard always loved building and fixing things, and at the age of 43, he followed his dream and became a full-time carpenter. Richard was a true craftsman and took pleasure in building and making things beautiful. He put the same care and consideration into his work that he put into his personal relationships. Everyone who was blessed to know Richard knew that he was unfailingly kind, generous, non-judgmental, and willing to lend a helping hand. He volunteered his time and talent with Rebuilding Together and Habitat for Humanity and was a mentor to many.
Richard leaves a legacy of love. He looked for hearts everywhere he went and looked for the good in everyone. His faith was important to him, and he tried to follow the teachings and lessons of Jesus Christ in his own life. While carpentry was his calling, his highest purpose and proudest accomplishment was being a loving and present father to his beautiful daughters Mia and Ella and being a good partner to his love of twenty years, Erica. Richard was overjoyed to become a grandfather to his Honeyboy and made time every day to care for his mama, Sabina.
Richard had been working to build a beautifully crafted casita on the property of his childhood home, and friends are invited to donate to help his daughters continue his legacy and complete the casita here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-us-complete-richard-villarreals-dream-casita
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Thursday, April 24th, 2025, at 1:00 P.M. at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, Texas.
