Our mom was loved by so many because of her big heart. There wasn’t a person, or animal for that matter, whom she would turn away. Whether she was leaving cat food out on the porch for the strays or offering advice to our many friends, Mom did it out of compassion, kindness and love. Growing up, we constantly had friends at the house, and she welcomed them in, no matter the situation. Oftentimes joking that we always seemed to bring new people over when she was wearing her pink polka-dot pajamas!
Cards, casinos, coffee, and Christmas — all our mom’s favorite Cs! We have fond memories of hanging out at her friends’ houses watching them play Spades and listening to country music. Mom taught us all to play Rummy at a young age, and we had many a late night playing “just one more hand”. Thumb-tacked to the corkboard in her house is the “Championship Game” that she won against both of her sisters. She was proud of that win!
Anyone who knew my mom, knew she loved the casino. Anytime someone was on the way to Kickapoo, they knew Mom would be up for the trip. She mostly played the penny slots, but she had the best time doing it! As she became more ill, the casino trips had to end, so Scratch-off tickets became her new entertainment. It didn’t matter how many great gifts were in the White Elephant exchange at Christmas, if lottery tickets were an option, we all knew what Mom was stealing. Even the people who worked at the gas station up the street would send the lottery tickets home in a bag that said, “Good luck, Momma. We hope you win!”
Drinking coffee and scratching her lottery tickets became a staple at the house. She didn’t need fancy coffee; a cup of Instant with milk and sugar would do the trick. She was known for asking us to warm up the same cup several times before we would finally just tell her, “Let’s make a fresh cup”.
Of all the Cs she loved, Christmas was by far her favorite. Our mom had bins and bins of Christmas decorations. Decorating the front yard was an all day family affair and every inch was covered with a light or inflatable. When she became too ill to help, she drew diagrams and sat outside to make sure we were doing it correctly! The house was entirely redecorated to celebrate the Season, including taking pictures off the wall to hang the Christmas décor. There were four Christmas trees, and every ornament had a story connected to it. Needless to say, it took a while to be completely finished. It’s no wonder that Christmas was her favorite holiday; it was the Season that represented love, compassion and kindness. All of the qualities Mom had in Spades. We love you, Mom.
