After being surrounded by friends and family swapping stories and farewells, Rodger Dale Lewis, of San Antonio, TX, passed away in the early morning hours of September 12, 2023. We love and miss him so much, but rejoice that he is HOME in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Rodger was the son of Martha Curren Stroud (Hildon Wright Stroud) and Owen Thomas Lewis. He grew up in Mason, TX and San Antonio, TX, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he returned to San Antonio and met and married the love of his life, Dianne Phipps Lewis on March 9, 1967. They joyfully raised their daughter, Dawn, and made lifelong friendships that have been like family. They extended family ties to their niece Cheryl, nephew Brad, and other cousins, as Rodger was a bonus Dad to many who loved him dearly. Later in life, he loved being “Papo” to his adored grandchildren. Rodger, Dianne, and Dawn lived in the Dallas area for a few years where he attended the University of Texas at Arlington (graduating from UTSA). Rodger worked in the insurance claims industry in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. His work ethic was unparalleled as he built many trusted relationships as a Specialist. Rodger’s work extended beyond the office--he was usually busy with building projects or helping others fix things. He was a master of many trades and believed in the “work hard—play hard” philosophy. Rodger was known to have FUN! In his spry days he loved to play golf and dance and sing at family gatherings. He enjoyed family trips to Hawaii and cruising the Caribbean, but also appreciated being home. In his later days, he loved listening to the Word of God during quiet times and visiting with folks over a drink on the back porch. Rodger, your chair on the Hill in the family neighborhood will serve to remind us of your genuine love, laughter, and a life well lived.
Rodger is preceded in death by his Mother, Martha Curren Stroud; Stepfather, Hildon Wright Stroud; Father-in-Law, Vernon “Bill” Phipps; Mother-in-Law, Ruth Gary Phipps and many beloved cousins.
Rodger is survived by Wife, Dianne Phipps Lewis; Daughter, Dawn Lewis Gorman (husband Jay); Grandchildren, Jackson Gorman, Jenna Grace Gorman and Colton Gorman; Nephew, Brad Phipps (wife Tina); Niece, Cheryl Phipps Smith (husband Gary); Great nephews, Jack Phipps and Austin Phipps; Great niece, Rylee Smith; Brother-in-Law, Vern Phipps (wife Nancy); Niece, Sarah Phipps Garcia (husband Victor); Stepsister Marcia Stroud Bicknase; and many other cousins who were like brothers and sisters.
