Roger Lee Ivey passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday March 17, 2012. Roger was born in Dothan, Alabama on June 25, 1946. After graduating high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and dutifully served his country for two years during the Vietnam conflict. Upon an honorable discharge, he traveled the east coast of the United States working in electronics and communications for many years before meeting and falling in love with Margaret Mary O’Toole. They were married in her hometown of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania in 1975 where they brought into being a daughter, Kathryn Nicole, in 1976 and a son, Kevin Lee, in 1979. In 1980, he and his brother Jim moved their families to San Antonio, Texas where they established their own thriving communications business and have remained since. He suffered a tragic motorcycle accident on March 9, 1982 that left him paraplegic.
Roger was an avid photographer in his earlier years, a skilled electronics guru and tinkerer throughout his life, and a lover of all things sci-fi. If he had one regret, it was probably that his time on Earth did not include a chance to visit outer space. He was a proud and tender father, a patient, caring and devoted husband and was known by all as strong but gentle, wise yet humble, and admirably modest in his needs. In spite of the physical limitations that shaped his last 30 years, he persevered as a husband and father and filled his life with friends and activities that brought him great happiness.
Roger is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ellen Odom. He is survived by his father, Henry Lee Ivey, siblings, James Ivey, Dean Harris, Deana Harris, Wanda Brewer, Peggy Coussens, and Randall Ivey, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and by his loving wife, Margaret Ivey, their two children, Kathryn and Kevin Ivey, and granddaughters, Parker Kline and Gracen Ivey.
Although Roger will be painfully missed, we are forever grateful that he had the opportunity to see both of his children marry their beloved and start families of their own and that he left this world serenely in his sleep. He will continue to serve as a guiding force in our lives.
Please join family and friends for a gathering at the Ivey home to remember and celebrate Roger.
