

Roland grew up in Fort Worth, Texas and graduated from Poly High School in 1959. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management and Cost Accounting from Texas Christian University in 1963, was an ROTC Cadet and graduated with a direct commission into the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant.
Roland was an L-19/O-1 “Bird Dog” pilot in the 184th Recon Airplane Company, 1st Aviation Brigade. He served bravely during the Vietnam War with over 1,300 combat hours earning over 30 medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross; 19 Air Medal Awards with Oak Leaf Clusters; and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, presented by the Vietnam Government. His Company of 11 aircraft also received the Presidential Unit Citation Medal and the 1st Aviation Brigade was honored with a Memorial Statue at Fort Rucker, Alabama in October of 2015.
Roland retired from active duty and then continued to serve in the United States Army Reserves in the 467th Supply and Service Battalion in Corpus Christi, Texas. He achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel and served as the Executive Officer of the Battalion.
In his civilian life, Roland was an entrepreneur who started and ran various successful businesses. He worked until the very end of his life for Systems Design Corporation as the self-declared “world’s oldest IT guy.” He was an accomplished creator of websites, podcasts and other digital media and always kept up with the latest technologies.
Roland also turned what started as a hobby into a second career. Using his considerable artistic abilities, he became a professional photographer specializing in individual portraits. Roland loved taking portrait pictures for family and friends and was very generous with his time and talents creating years of memories for many. Roland was also a great cook with the gift of hospitality and enjoyed serving meals for family and friends.
An avid Bible student and teacher, Roland along with his wife Carla opened up their home to many people, sharing God’s Word, praying and worshipping. Many Bible study lessons were taught in his home over the years and the depth of his teachings touched many lives.
Roland will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather (Daddy Rol and RoRo), friend, mentor and a faithfully serving member of the Church.
He is survived by his wife Carla Miller of Bulverde, Texas; brother John Michael Miller of Dallas, Texas; son Roland Wesley Miller, Jr. and wife Kelli of Roswell, New Mexico; son Reagan Miller and wife Alma of Spring Branch, Texas; daughter Casey Menn and husband Michael of Bulverde, Texas; grandchildren Zoe Miller, Mason Miller, Arianna Reid, Akayla Soliz, Joshua Roland Miller, Harper Menn, Maverick Menn and Walker Menn; great grandchildren Griffin and Cullen Reid, Evyn, Kayzlee, Adelynn and Sophya Reyes.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 am, Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
