Rose Marie L. Florio, born April 23, 1934, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the age of 77. Known in San Antonio as “Mama Florio”, Rose Marie was the owner of Florio’s Pizza on Broadway. Originally from Teaneck, New Jersey, she was a drum majorette with her high school band. One of her grandest memories was leading the Teaneck high school band at Yankee Stadium before a championship game.
Rose Marie married her high school sweetheart in 1952, and they moved to Paramus, NJ in 1955 where they started their family. They sold their shop in 1988 and moved to San Antonio where their oldest son had moved years before. They reopened their pizza business in San Antonio in 1990 on Stahl road. A year later they moved to a larger location on Nacogdoches road and in 1993 she was chosen to be the original pizza concessionaire in the Alamo Dome. In 1995 they opened the existing location that everyone has come to love, located on Broadway and West Nottingham. Florio’s Pizza is now one of the top pizzeria’s in San Antonio.
