It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Russell Brown, a distinguished figure in the banking world and a beloved member of the community. Russell departed on November 15, 2023, leaving a legacy of professionalism, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his family.
Russell was a lifelong San Antonian, born there on March 5, 1936, to Eddie and Pearle Brown. Russell was raised by his grandmother (Big Mama), Uncle Charles, and Aunt Ida. Russell attended Brackenridge High School before attending the University of Wisconsin on a football scholarship. After graduation, he returned to San Antonio and obtained an MBA from St. Mary’s University. Russell then spent the bulk of his life in San Antonio. He was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and was a pillar in the banking industry in San Antonio (and beyond) until he retired at age 80 in 2016. Among Russell's many roles, he served as President/Sr VP of many banks, including First National, Gross National, Northern Hills, Ft. Sam Houston, Hebbronville National, and Lake Jackson National for 60 years. While his career was marked by dedication and excellence, it was defined by his focus on the well-being of those with whom he worked.
Russell’s faith was an integral part of his life, as reflected in the numerous highlighted passages, notes, and flags found throughout it. One of his favorite passages was Galatians 2:16:“[K]now that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.”
Russell achieved his pilot’s license at age 50 and loved to fly with the Cessna Air Men’s Club. In addition, he loved to hunt, was an avid clay pigeon competitor, enjoyed collecting guns (many of whom were never fired), and was blessed to go on his “trip of a lifetime” to Africa in 2015 (including a photography safari in Kruger National Park) with his son Marvin, daughter Marsha, and son-in-law Andy.
Russell was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joe Ann, whose memory and love remained a source of strength for him his entire life. His loving children and their spouses survive Russell - Dr. Marvin R. and Debbie Brown, Marsha L. and Andy Osborn, and Marlene G. and Kenneth Cashian – as well as six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Russell often commented that his life was made complete by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His devotion to his family was evident in the bonds he cultivated and the values he instilled in his children. Russell’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through the cherished memories of family and friends.
A man of integrity and warmth, Russell will be remembered for his professional achievements, his generosity, compassion, and the love he showered upon those closest to him. As we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, let us also celebrate his enduring impact on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.
