On August 3, 2016, Ruth Jane Kelley Fowler, Ed.D. answered our Lord's call to come home to Him. Ruth is survived by her husband of 64 years and the love of her life: William ("Bill") McDonald Fowler. She is also survived by three (3) children, William McDonald Fowler, Jr., Joan Kelley Fowler Gluys (Gary Gluys) and Molly Elizabeth Fowler Richards (G. Scott Richards). Treasured surviving grandchildren who named her "Nanny" include Ruth Kelley Fiorino (Devin Leissner fiancé), William Scott Richards, William McDonald Fowler, III, Neal Joseph Fiorino, Vanessa Christine Fowler (James Muse fiancé), Heather Nichole Fowler (Rudy Gonzalez fiancé), Walter Scott Richards, Ansel Scott Richards and Kelley Anne Richards. Ruth has two precious great grandchildren, Kaylee Shea Fowler and Xander Liam Muse. Ruth is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Ansel Russell Kelley and Maxine Gertrude Palmerton Kelley and her brother William Downing.
Ruth's rock solid Catholic faith was central to her being. She raised her family and formed lifelong friends in the cradles of Blessed Sacrament Parish, Saint Rita's Holy Family Guild and the "Double Ring" Club. Later, Ruth and Bill moved into Saint Mark the Evangelist Parish. Firm faith guided her in every earthly role and only strengthened in times of suffering through cancer. Ruth triumphed in life with grace, dignity and spunk.
Ruth graduated from Jefferson High School and attended the University of Texas in Austin. Following the marriage of Ruth and Bill on June 14, 1952, she devoted herself to her children and spouse. Determined, Ruth returned to her education at Incarnate Word College and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. Her passions about the wellbeing and education of children continued. She became an elementary educator extraordinaire, earned a Master of Arts in Education and English (1973) and ultimately achieved her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova University (1986). As an elementary school principal (19 years), educator (6 years) and Director of Curriculum (2 years) in Northeast Independent School District her inspired and energetic leadership touched and shaped countless children, educators and administrators. As with her church family, Ruth formed deep, eternal friendships with her colleagues.
Ruth began teaching fifth grade at Wilshire Elementary School. She then opened Woodstone Elementary and Redland Oaks Elementary Schools. Under her leadership, Redland Oaks attained Exemplary Status in the State of Texas. Her career in education was continuously affirmed with awards, recognitions and accolades though she was genuinely surprised by them.
Ruth's soulful legacy lives and breathes in the fabric of her family, friends and those she encountered.
