Sam Penner, age 92, passed away June 22, 2002 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Siemiatycze, Poland in 1910 and immigrated to the United States, arriving in Ellis Island in 1918. He became a citizen of the United States in 1942. His father, Morris Penner, pedelled used clothing until opening up Penner's Men's Clothing Store in 1916. Sam, at the young age of 13, dropped out of school to help out his ailing father at Penner's. Sam continued working at the store until March of 2002. In 1933, he opened Todds on Houston Street. He enjoyed working with his brother, Ben and Max Penner, who had preceded him in death. As a young kid, Sam enjoyed handball and boxing. He started jogging at the age of 40 and continued until the age of 82. His biggest love was the one he had for his three children, Beryl, Mickey and Markey and his deceased wife, Millie. His sense of fairness is still the loyalty in not only his employees, but in everyone that knew him. His memory will live within us forever. His spirit will always be a part of his family and friends. He is survived by his son Mark Penner; daughter-in-law, Janice; daughter-in-law, Marsha; daughter, Beryl Greenberg and husband, Herm; his grandchildren, Millie and Mike Sprintz, Joel and Michelle Greenberg, Matthew Penner, Melanie Penner, Mitchell Penner and Max Penner.
