Sam W. Callahan, Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away on October 3, 2024, at the age of 81. Known affectionately as "Big Sam," he was a man of hard work and strong principles with a great sense of humor.
Born in San Antonio to Beatrice and Clarence Callahan, Sam married his high school sweetheart and lifelong love, Judy Hausmann. After serving honorably in the 36th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army National Guard, Sam joined the family business, S.X. Callahan, Inc., which was established by his grandfather in 1909.
Starting in the service department, he later managed the business from the warehouse. Sam proudly worked alongside his sons, Sam, Jr. and Patrick, continuing the family legacy until his retirement. Even in retirement, he remained a constant presence, visiting the shop nearly every day.
Sam took great pride in his service to both his country and his community. He was a Past Master of the Davy Crockett Lodge No. 1225 (1984-85) and a dedicated member of the Alzafar Shrine. An avid outdoorsman, Sam cherished spending time with his family hunting in Laredo and Eagle Pass, and fishing in Rockport and Port Aransas.
Alamo Heights was Sam’s home from childhood through his golden years. Eventually, he would move to Bulverde to live alongside Sam, Jr. and his family. Big Sam frequently was heard saying living out here was like a slice of Heaven.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, and his siblings, Clarence and Sharon and sister-in-law Sissy Howard. He is survived by his sons, Sam Callahan, Jr., his wife, Ann, Patrick Callahan, his wife, Erin; his grandchildren, Hunter, Pamela, Samantha, and Rose; his sisters, Sally and Susan, along with their children and grandchildren; cousins, S.X. Callahan III, his wife, Genie, Carol Anne Matter and her husband, Frank.
Sam will be remembered for his deep love for his family, his unwavering dedication to his work, and his zest for life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A small family service will be held at Sunset Memorial Park & Funeral Home.
