Sharon Lucille Callahan was born Sharon Lucille Sammons in Covington, Georgia on July 1st, 1937. Her kindness, sweetness and always putting others first originated in her Georgia roots. After high school, Sharon joined the United States Air Force and became a Registered Nurse. Again, demonstrating her commitment to others. While in the Air Force she met her would-be-husband, Richard J. Callahan at Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, Texas where they wed and started a family. After the birth of their first daughter, Cindy, Sharon decided to become a homemaker and raise her family. Many moves across the United States with 3 daughters, Dick and Sharon landed back in Del Rio for 20 years and then called San Antonio their final home.
Sharon loved reading, needlepointing, playing bridge and great conversations over a latte with friends. Her dedication to her Catholic faith was evident in her daily life. She always sacrificed her needs for the good of her family and friends. Sharon will be remembered as a selfless wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and devoted friend to many. Wherever Sharon planted herself and her family, she became an active volunteer in the church, the community and her children’s activities.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Isla Mae Sammons; and her brothers, Robert and James Sammons. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Richard J. Callahan; her children, Cynthia Rohde and her husband, William, Mary Potts and her husband, Steve, Molly Renaud and her husband, Todd; her brother, Drake Sammons and his wife, Beverly; her grandchildren, Meaghan Schmidt and her husband, James, Cal Rohde, Jack Renaud, Grace Renaud; great granddaughter, Piper Jane Schmidt; and many Sammons and Callahan family members.
A Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 12th from 1:00-2:00 pm at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio with the Funeral Service to follow at 2:00 pm. Interment will be on a later date at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
