Shay was married to Jerry Akin for 60 years, building a life filled with love and devotion. Together, they raised three children: Shannon Souddress and her husband Ron, Scott Akin and his wife Kim, and their late daughter Ashley Akin. She was also a cherished grandmother to Brianna Salazar and her husband Joe, Andrew Souddress, Joshua Akin, and Nicholas Akin. Her legacy extended to her great-grandchildren, Lorelai and Archer Salazar. Shay is also survived by her younger sisters, Suzanne and husband Don James, Sarah and her husband Dave Wuertz.
A woman of warmth and kindness, Shay had an extraordinary ability to connect with children.
Known as a "baby whisperer," she had a special gift-wherever she went, babies would be drawn to her, wide-eyed and smiling. This gentle nature made her an irreplaceable presence in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
For over 30 years, Shay thrived as a Mary Kay Sales Director. Her passion for sales was not just about business; it was about uplifting others and helping them feel confident in themselves. She found joy in mentoring others and making a positive impact on their lives.
Raised as the daughter of a Methodist minister, faith played an important role in Shay's life. Her kindness and generosity reflected the values instilled in her from an early age.
Shay's presence brought light into the lives of those who knew her. Her memory will continue to comfort to all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
