Shirley Ann Bories, age 80, passed into the loving arms of Jesus on May 21, 2025. She was born on May 12, 1945, in Erie, PA, to Andrew and Helene Estok. She was a musician and majorette at Fairview High School. Following her graduation in 1963, she studied at Bryant and Stratton Business College in Buffalo, NY. While there, she was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency and moved to Northern Virginia. While working at the Agency, she met another Agency employee who became the love of her life, Robert (Bob) F. Bories, Jr. They eventually married on November 18, 1967, at which time Bob was a second lieutenant in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Sam Houston, TX. She was the consummate military spouse, dealing with multiple moves to duty stations such as Washington, DC; Fort Bragg, NC; Fort Belvoir, VA; Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, CO; Fort Bliss, TX; and multiple assignments to Fort Sam Houston. She also accompanied Bob on extended temporary training assignments at Fort Holabird, MD; Fort Sheridan, IN and Fort Lee, VA. They also endured a year-long separation while Bob served in Vietnam. During this time, their first son, Sean, was born in 1969. Their second son, Brett, was born in 1972. Shirley made the best of every assignment, but her favorites were in Augsburg, Landstuhl and Nurenberg, Germany. She enjoyed traveling in Europe, and her and Bob’s favorite spot-on earth is Garmisch, Germany. Shirley worked as a U.S. Government Civil Service employee and retired in 2005 with over 28 years of service. She earned an Associates Degree in Public Administration from San Antonio College during one of the assignments at Fort Sam Houston. Following Bob’s retirement from the Army in 1994, they resided in Massachusetts for 9 ½ years before finally settling in San Antonio.
Shirley was a woman of deep Christian faith. She became even closer to God during a Walk to Emmaus in 2013. She thoroughly enjoyed playing handbells and played in handbell choirs El Paso, TX, Reading, MA and San Antonio.
A true animal lover, she enjoyed watching squirrels and birds in her yard, but her greatest joy was found in her love of the five dogs that shared her and Bob’s lives. Freckles, Sabrina, Cyndi, Sara and Dori were female pups that she referred to as her “dog-ters.”
Shirley possessed a unique gift of making those around her feel comfortable. Gregarious by nature, she could engage total strangers in animated conversations as if they were life-long friends.
Hers was a life filled with love for God, family and country. She will be missed, but we look forward to reuniting in Heaven.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, COL (ret.) Robert F. Bories, Jr.; sons, Sean (fiancée Anissa), and Brett (Kimberly); granddaughter, Ashley; and brother Andrew Estok (Kathleen).
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2101 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, Texas.
A Funeral Service will take place on Monday, June 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
